We often think of our clothes as things, as possessions separate from ourselves when in reality, they act as a second skin. 🪖
Your personal style can help you befriend your body and manage your moods, meaning that your choice of outfit can have a profound effect on how you feel. So, to celebrate the power of clothing to help you lean into who you truly are the FiP team have decided to relaunch our series (love to you if you remember this from a few years back now!) called My Second Skin where we’ll be speaking to people from all walks of life about the role that their wardrobe plays in their everyday life. 💄
Bianca-Francesca Foley
To kick things off, we spoke to Bianca-Francesca Foley, founder, editor-in-chief and host of Sustainably Influenced, presenter, podcast host and sustainability consultant.
She has worked with many brands including PUMA, COACH and Monica Vinader; and hosts Sustainably Influenced the podcast, where she discusses how we can all do more to include more ethical practices in all aspects of daily life.
Over the years, her love for fashion evolved into a mission to encourage others to shop more ethically and to reduce their consumption where possible. For Bianca, sustainability is an ever evolving term and she believes that it’s the small collective changes that will make a difference.
How do your clothes make you feel?
My clothes make me feel connected to myself, my values, and the world around me. I love knowing that each piece I wear is thoughtfully chosen, whether it’s sustainably made, secondhand or just something I love! I really connect to the stories behind my clothes and it brings me a sense of purpose and joy every time I get dressed.
What is your most treasured item that brings you joy?
I have quite a few treasured items – I have a small beaded bag that was my mums (which I am saving for my wedding next year); a pair of cowboy boots, also stolen from my mum’s wardrobe, that I wear alllll the time; and finally a gorgeous Ulla Johnson dress that I wear every summer. It was a big purchase for me at the time and was to celebrate pursuing a full time career as a podcaster and creator. I love that dress and feel SO incredible every time I wear it – it reminds me that I had the confidence to step out and go it alone!
Do you believe your clothes define you in any way?
Yes, my clothes definitely define me, but not just in terms of style – they represent my commitment to sustainability. I love expressing my values through what I wear, whether it’s by choosing eco-friendly fabrics, supporting ethical brands, or giving new life to secondhand pieces. My wardrobe is a reflection of who I have become over the past few years as a reformed over-consumer!
Has social media changed your relationship with your clothes?
Social media has deepened my relationship with my clothes, especially in terms of sustainability. It has it’s pros and cons but I try to focus on the positives – I can learn about new sustainable practices, share my own journey, and connect with others who are passionate about ethical fashion. It’s inspiring to see a growing community that values mindful consumption and creativity in reimagining how we approach fashion.
