We often think of our clothes as things, as possessions separate from ourselves when in reality, they act as a second skin. 🪖

Your personal style can help you befriend your body and manage your moods, meaning that your choice of outfit can have a profound effect on how you feel. So, to celebrate the power of clothing to help you lean into who you truly are the FiP team have decided to relaunch our series (love to you if you remember this from a few years back now!) called My Second Skin where we’ll be speaking to people from all walks of life about the role that their wardrobe plays in their everyday life. 💄

YOLA

This time, we spoke to Yola, a fashion content creator with a background in styling.

How do your clothes make you feel?

My clothes make me feel inspired! I love going into dress up spirals and finding tons of new ways to style the same things.

What is your most treasured item that brings you joy?

My most treasured item is currently my burgundy vintage Gucci bag, it’s the perfect cherry on top of every outfit.

Do you believe your clothes define you in any way?

I wouldn’t say my clothes define me at all. For me fashion is a tool to have fun and be creative which is a huge part of who I am but I keep my sense of identity separate from physical appearance as best I can. I define my style but it doesn’t define me.

Has social media changed your relationship with your clothes?

Posting on social media has allowed me to be much less practical about clothes in the best way. I’ll find really dramatic and unique shoes that would look perfect in a photo and end up wearing them out all the time too. Clothes are becoming a tool for me to create moments that are bigger than just how I look in them. I dress to spark joy and ideas for others more than I dress for compliments now.

Can you think of a time when your clothes impacted how you thought about yourself?

Well, yes! Every time I feel like I’ve perfectly executed an outfit it makes me feel fierce and a little invincible. There are also times if I’m feeling down when clothes have definitely made me feel worse. We all know the classic mental breakdown while getting ready when nothing you own seems to fit right, but I guess it’s unfair to blame the clothes.
